Understanding Webcam Metrics
The numbers this test reports mean different things depending on what you're actually using the camera for.
Resolution
The pixel dimensions your camera actually captures, not just what the box advertises. 720p is genuinely fine for video calls; streaming or recording benefits from 1080p or higher, since compression and re-encoding both cost detail along the way.
Frame Rate (FPS)
How many frames your camera delivers per second. 24–30fps is standard and reads as smooth for calls. 60fps matters more for streaming or fast motion, where lower frame rates show visible judder.
Bitrate
How much data your video stream uses per second. Higher bitrate preserves more detail but needs more bandwidth — this is usually the first thing a call platform reduces when your connection is under strain, which is why video looks blocky on a weak network before it drops entirely.
Exposure
How the camera balances light and dark in a frame. Backlighting (a bright window behind you) is the most common cause of a too-dark face, since the sensor exposes for the brightest thing it sees rather than for you specifically.
