Notes

What correction can and cannot recover

Corrections redistribute the information your sensor captured. They cannot add information that was never recorded, and that distinction determines what is worth attempting. If a window behind you is pure white, there is no detail hiding in those pixels to bring back — the sensor clipped and the data is gone. If your face is dark but not black, the detail is there and brightness will genuinely reveal it, though pushing hard will also amplify whatever noise came with it.

This is why lighting comes first and correction second. A well-lit frame gives these sliders something to work with. A badly lit frame gives them a choice between dark and noisy.

Working through the controls in order

1. BrightnessSet overall exposure so your face reads clearly. Stop as soon as any highlight begins to flatten into pure white.
2. ContrastWebcam output is typically flat. A modest increase adds definition; too much crushes shadow detail and hardens skin tones.
3. WarmthCorrects the colour cast from mixed indoor lighting. Warm indoor bulbs push orange, some LEDs push blue. Adjust until neutral objects in frame look neutral.
4. GammaAdjusts midtones without moving black and white points. This is the control that lifts a face out of shadow while leaving the background alone.

The important limitation

This is a preview, not a filter applied to your outgoing feed. A web page cannot inject a processed video stream into Zoom, Teams, OBS, or any other application — browsers deliberately prevent that, and no amount of clever coding works around it.

What this is genuinely for is diagnosis. Find the combination that makes your feed look right, then reproduce it where it can actually take effect: in your webcam manufacturer's own software, in your operating system's camera settings, or in a dedicated virtual-camera application that supports custom adjustment. Knowing you need roughly a fifteen percent brightness lift and a warmth reduction is far more actionable than knowing only that you look wrong.
