Webcam Fix & Troubleshooting Guide

Almost every "broken" webcam falls into one of four buckets, and identifying which one you have saves far more time than working through fixes at random. This page sorts the problem first, then sends you to the specific guide — because the fix for a denied permission has nothing in common with the fix for a black screen.

The Order That Resolves the Most Cases Fastest

  1. Check the physical layer. A privacy shutter, a function-key toggle, or a USB cable in the wrong port. These take ten seconds and account for a surprising share of failures.
  2. Check the site permission. Browsers remember a refusal permanently and will not prompt again. Click the icon left of the address bar and set Camera to Allow.
  3. Check the operating system permission. Both Windows and macOS grant access per application, so one app can be blocked while others work.
  4. Close everything else using the camera. Most cameras allow only one active connection at a time.
  5. Only then look at drivers. Most webcams are standard USB Video Class devices needing no driver, which is why this step is last rather than first.

Start here: which problem do you have?

No image and an error messageA permission problem. The camera never opened. Go to the black screen and access denied guide, or your platform guide for the exact settings path.
The camera light is on but the screen is blackThe hardware is working and something downstream is failing. Usually another application holding the camera, a privacy shutter, or antivirus webcam protection.
The camera is missing from the device list entirelyA driver, physical connection or firmware-level disable. Start with the driver guide, and check any function-key camera toggle on a laptop.
It works, but the image looks wrongNot a fault at all — a quality problem. The diagnostic tools measure which variable is responsible, and the fix plan ranks what to change.

Guides by platform

WindowsTwo privacy toggles plus a per-app list, and error 0xA00F4244 when no camera is detected at all.
macOSSafari maintains its own per-site permission separately from the system, and the green-light-black-screen fault has a specific fix.
ChromeOSOn a school or work Chromebook the block is often administrator policy, which no user setting overrides.
MobileiOS and Android grant permission at two levels, and in-app browsers frequently fail where the real browser works.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my webcam not working?
Work through the layers in order: physical shutter or function key, browser site permission, operating system permission, another app holding the camera, then drivers. Most failures resolve in the first three.
How do I fix a webcam black screen?
If the indicator light is on, the camera is working and something downstream is blocking the image — usually another app, a privacy shutter, or antivirus webcam protection. If the light is off, it is a permission problem instead.
Why does my camera say access denied?
The browser recorded a refusal and will not prompt again. Click the icon left of the address bar, set Camera to Allow, and reload. Then confirm the operating system permission for your browser.
Do I need to reinstall my webcam driver?
Usually not. Most webcams are standard USB Video Class devices supported by the driver already built into your operating system. Check permissions and app conflicts before assuming a driver problem.
How do I know if my webcam is broken or just disabled?
Test it on another computer. If a USB camera fails on a second machine through a direct port, it is genuinely faulty. If it works, the problem is configuration on the first machine rather than hardware.
I've checked everything above and it still doesn't work — what now?
Run the Camera Troubleshooter Wizard for a guided, interactive diagnosis, or the Camera Block Detector for an automated technical check that reads the exact browser error your device is reporting.
