Framing verdicts are a practical proxy based on face position and headroom in frame — not a true 3D camera-angle measurement, since that needs depth data a single webcam doesn't have.

Why lighting outranks camera quality

Given a fixed budget, light beats hardware almost every time. A modest webcam in good light consistently looks better than an expensive one in a dim room, and the reason is physical rather than a matter of taste. Less light reaching the sensor forces it to amplify a weaker signal, which raises visible noise, and it forces longer exposure per frame, which softens motion and can quietly reduce your effective frame rate.

This is why replacing a camera so often disappoints. The new sensor is starved of exactly the same light the old one was.

What this tool measures, and what it does not

A face-landmark model runs on your device to locate your face in frame, then compares brightness on your face against brightness in the surrounding background. A background substantially brighter than your face is the signature of backlighting, which is the single most common cause of the silhouette effect people complain about.

The framing readout is deliberately labelled as a two-dimensional proxy. It measures where your face sits within the frame — your headroom above and your margin below — which is a genuinely useful guide. It is not a three-dimensional measurement of camera angle, and a browser working from a single ordinary lens cannot honestly claim to provide one.

Acting on the feedback

Backlight warningTurn to face the window rather than sitting with it behind you. If the desk cannot move, add a light in front of you or close the blinds partially.
UnderexposedAdd a soft light source at roughly eye level. A bright white window on your monitor works surprisingly well as an improvised fill light.
OverexposedMove the light further away or bounce it off a wall or ceiling. Direct light close to your face blows out highlights that cannot be recovered.
Too much headroomRaise the camera or lower your seat. Your eyes should sit roughly a third of the way down the frame, not in the middle.

How to Run the Test

  3. Read the live badges for exposure and framing issues as they appear.
  4. Adjust one thing at a time — move your light, then recheck, rather than changing everything at once.

Why do I look dark on video calls?
Backlighting is the usual cause: a window or lamp behind you makes the camera expose for the bright area and push your face into shadow. This tool detects that specific condition directly.
Where should I put my light for video calls?
In front of you at roughly eye level, not overhead and never behind. A bright white window on your monitor works as an improvised fill light if you have nothing else.
How high should my webcam be?
At eye level, with your eyes about a third of the way down the frame. A laptop on a desk points up at you, which is the least flattering angle and the easiest thing to fix.
Can this tool measure my camera angle?
