ChromeOS site permissions
Per-site permissionClick the icon to the left of the address bar, find Camera, and set it to Allow. Then reload the page. Chrome remembers a denial permanently and will not prompt again on its own.
Global camera settingsOpen chrome://settings/content/camera to see every site you have allowed or blocked, change the default behaviour, and select which camera is used when more than one is available.
Check the camera app firstOpen the built-in Camera app from the launcher. If it shows a picture there but not in the browser, the hardware is fine and the problem is a site or Chrome permission.
Managed Chromebooks — school and work devices
How to tellIf you see "Managed by your organization" in Chrome's menu, or a briefcase icon in settings, an administrator controls policy on the device.
What an administrator can blockCamera access can be disabled at policy level for specific sites, for all sites, or entirely. When this is the cause, no setting in your own account will override it — the block is applied above your user profile.
What to doContact your school IT desk or workplace administrator and give them the specific site you need camera access for. They can add an exception centrally. Attempting to bypass a managed policy is not something we can help with, and on a school-issued device it is likely against the acceptable-use terms you agreed to.
Locked-down exam browsersProctoring and lockdown exam software often takes exclusive control of the camera and blocks all other access while running. Close it fully before testing.
Google Meet and ChromeOS updates
Meet uses the same permissionGoogle Meet runs in the browser on ChromeOS, so it depends on the same camera permission as any other site. Fixing it here fixes Meet.
Update ChromeOSGo to Settings > About ChromeOS > Check for updates. Camera driver fixes ship inside ChromeOS updates rather than separately, so an out-of-date device cannot be patched any other way.
Powerwash as a last resortA factory reset resolves persistent camera faults on personal Chromebooks. It erases local data, and on a managed device it will not remove administrator policy.
