The USB connection is the usual culprit

Try a different port firstFront-panel ports, unpowered hubs, docking stations and the USB ports built into monitors are the most frequent cause of a camera that will not appear or that underperforms. Plug directly into the computer.
Use USB 3.0 for high resolutions1080p at high frame rates and any 4K mode need USB 3.0 bandwidth. On a USB 2.0 port many cameras still work but silently fall back to a lower resolution, which is why the readout above may not match the box.
Avoid long or passive extensionsLong extension cables and passive USB-C to USB-A adapters cause intermittent dropouts and resolution fallback. Test connected directly before concluding the camera is faulty.
Check for USB power managementOn Windows, open Device Manager, find the USB hub the camera sits on, and under Power Management uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".

When the camera is detected but not selected

Your laptop may prefer its built-in cameraApplications commonly default to the first camera listed, which on a laptop is the integrated one. Select your USB camera explicitly in the app’s device settings.
Only one app can hold a cameraClose every other application that might have it open, including background conferencing apps and old browser tabs.
Check the per-app permissionBoth Windows and macOS grant camera access per application, so a USB camera can work in one app and be blocked in another.

When to conclude the camera is faulty

It fails on a second computer tooThis is the clearest test. If a USB camera is not detected on any machine through any port, the camera or its cable is genuinely faulty.
It appears as an unknown deviceOn Windows, a camera showing as "Unknown Device" under Universal Serial Bus controllers rather than under Cameras usually indicates a hardware or firmware fault.
It works but the image is wrongA camera that connects but produces a black, distorted or frozen image is more often a driver or software conflict than a hardware failure — work through the black-screen guide before replacing it.
