Camera privacy comes down to a genuine distinction between software-level protection and physical certainty, and knowing which one you're actually relying on matters. On most modern webcams, the indicator LED is hardware-wired to the same power rail as the sensor, which means software alone cannot activate the camera without also lighting it — a deliberate hardware safeguard, not a convention malware can quietly work around, though a smaller number of older or cheaper cameras use a firmware-controlled LED where documented exceptions exist. Disabling a camera in Device Manager, or through your operating system's own privacy toggle, is genuinely effective against the overwhelming majority of real-world software — but it remains a software-level setting that theoretically privileged malware could reverse, unlike a physical lens cover, which works regardless of any software state at all.
