USB power and bandwidth limits, driver corruption, Device Manager error codes, and the real physical failure points — ribbon cables, privacy shutters, port topology — behind a camera that won't reliably connect.

Beneath the permission and application layers sits the physical one: USB power delivery, available bandwidth, and the driver translating raw hardware into something your operating system can present as a usable device. A 4K camera draws meaningfully more current than a 1080p one, and a marginal port, cable, or unpowered hub can be the entire explanation for a camera that disconnects specifically at higher resolutions while working fine at lower ones. USB hubs introduce a second, separate constraint — every device sharing that hub's single upstream connection competes for the same total bandwidth, which is a genuinely different failure mode from simple power starvation even though both can look identical from the outside.

Drivers add a further layer most people never think about until something breaks: the vast majority of webcams work through Windows' generic, built-in UVC (USB Video Class) driver rather than any manufacturer-specific software, which is exactly why a camera showing up as "UVC Camera" instead of its real product name is completely normal, not a sign of a problem. When Windows does flag a genuine fault, it does so through a small set of standardized Device Manager codes — Code 10 is deliberately generic and can mean almost anything, while Code 43 specifically means the device's own driver detected and reported a problem, a real distinction that changes which fix is actually worth trying first. This category also covers the physical failure points that live entirely outside software: laptop hinge ribbon cables that degrade after years of opening and closing, and privacy shutters thick enough to crack an ultra-thin display when the lid closes.

A genuinely useful habit across this entire category: testing the same camera on a completely different computer, when one is available, is often the fastest way to tell whether a fault lives in the camera itself or in your specific system's USB controllers, drivers, power management, or a specific USB controller entirely.
