Teleprompter & Eye Contact Trainer

A free online teleprompter solves a specific problem: reading from a screen makes most people glance down and away from the lens, which reads as shifty or disengaged on camera. Paste your script below, scroll it near your camera as you read, and record a 30-second test to get an approximate eye-contact score.

This is a heuristic estimate from eye and head position — not clinical-grade gaze tracking. Treat it as directional practice feedback, not a precise score.

How to Look at the Camera While Reading a Script

The difficulty is geometric rather than a matter of willpower. Your script and your lens are in two different places, so every glance down at your words is a visible break in eye contact. Professional teleprompters solve this with a beam-splitter that reflects text directly over the lens, putting both in the same line of sight. A browser overlay cannot do that, but it closes most of the gap by keeping your script as near the lens as a screen allows.

Three habits do most of the remaining work. Read in phrases rather than word by word — glance down, take a complete thought, then deliver it while looking up. Slow your pace slightly, which buys time to recover eye contact between phrases. And raise your camera to eye level first, because no amount of script positioning compensates for a lens pointing up at you from a laptop on a desk.

What eye contact software can honestly measure

This is where most eye contact software oversells itself, so it is worth being precise about what is happening here. Purpose-built eye trackers use infrared illumination and dedicated sensors to locate your pupil and the reflection on your cornea, which yields genuinely precise gaze coordinates. An ordinary webcam has none of that — only visible-light video.

What this tool does instead is run a face and iris landmark model on your device and estimate whether your eyes are broadly centred toward the lens or clearly angled away. That is a useful directional signal, and it is enough to reveal a real pattern such as consistently drifting down and to the left while reading. It is not a clinical measurement, which is why the result is labelled a Camera-Facing Estimate rather than a gaze score.

The guards in the tool follow from that honesty. If tracking never engaged, or fewer than fifteen usable frames were captured, it reports "N/A" instead of inventing a number. A percentage you cannot trust is worse than no percentage at all.

Getting a useful practice session

Use your real scriptRehearsing with placeholder text trains nothing. Paste the actual answers or talking points you will deliver.
Set the scroll speed low firstReading slightly slower than feels natural usually sounds better on camera, and it leaves room to recover if you stumble.
Watch the recording, not just the scoreThe percentage points at a pattern; the clip shows you what it actually looks like. The clip is more useful.
Run it more than onceA single take under thirty seconds is a small sample. Look at whether the figure trends upward across several attempts rather than treating one number as a verdict.

The face-tracking model is downloaded to your device and runs locally. Your recording is never uploaded, and we never receive a copy — it exists only in your browser until you close the page. Step-by-Step

How to Use the Teleprompter

  1. Paste your real script into the text box.
  2. Set your scroll speed — slower than feels natural usually reads better.
  3. Click "Start Camera" and allow access, then begin scrolling and reading.
  4. Optionally record a 30-second take to get a Camera-Facing Estimate and review the clip afterward.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a free online teleprompter?
Yes. Paste your script, set the scroll speed, and it scrolls over your camera preview. No account, no watermark and no time limit.
How do I look at the camera while reading a script?
Read in phrases rather than word by word — glance down, take a complete thought, then deliver it looking up. Slowing your pace slightly buys time to recover eye contact.
Does eye contact software actually work with a webcam?
Only approximately. Real gaze tracking needs infrared illumination and dedicated sensors. This estimates whether your eyes are broadly centred toward the lens, which is why the result is called a camera-facing estimate.
What scroll speed should I use for a teleprompter?
Slower than feels natural. Reading slightly under your normal pace sounds better on camera and leaves room to recover if you stumble.
Why does my score say "N/A" instead of a percentage?
Fewer than fifteen usable tracked frames were captured during your take — usually because tracking never engaged or the recording was very short. Rather than invent an unreliable number from too little data, the tool reports N/A honestly.
