What Your Camera Is Actually Delivering

  • Camera:
  • Resolution:
  • Frame Rate:
  • Aspect Ratio:
  • Microphone Detected:

These are the values your browser negotiated with the camera just now, not the numbers on the box. A difference between the two is exactly what the guidance below is for.

Integrated Camera Test — The Two Toggles Windows 11 Requires

Both must be onWindows 11 has a system switch and a per-app switch, and an app is blocked unless both are enabled. Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Camera. Turn on Camera access at the top, then Let apps access your camera beneath it.
Then find your browser in the listScroll further down the same page to the per-app list and confirm your browser is switched on individually. This is the step most guides omit, and it is why a camera can work in one app and fail in another on the same machine.
Desktop apps sit in a separate groupBelow the app list there is a distinct Let desktop apps access your camera section. Zoom, Teams and OBS installed as desktop programs are governed here rather than by the entry above.

Error 0xA00F4244 — NoCamerasAreAttached

What it actually meansWindows cannot detect any camera hardware at all. It is nearly always a driver, connection or privacy-lock problem rather than a failed sensor.
Check Device ManagerPress Win+X, choose Device Manager, expand Cameras. A yellow warning triangle indicates a driver fault; no entry at all points to a disabled device or a physical disconnection.
Try the generic UVC driverRight-click the camera, Update driver > Browse my computer > Let me pick from a list, and select USB Video Device. This generic driver resolves the error on a large share of machines where the manufacturer driver has broken.
Run the built-in troubleshooterOpen the Get Help app and search for the camera troubleshooter. It automates several of these checks and can repair configuration issues directly.

Windows 11 specifics worth knowing

Windows Studio EffectsOn machines with a compatible NPU, Windows 11 applies its own background blur, eye contact correction and auto-framing before the image reaches any app. If your feed looks processed in every application, check Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras and open your camera to review these effects.
The camera settings page is newSettings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras lets you adjust brightness and contrast per camera without any manufacturer software. Changes here affect every app.
"Camera in use by another application"Only one app can usually hold a camera. Close Teams, Zoom and any browser tab that has previously requested it, then check the system tray for background apps still running.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I update my webcam driver in Windows 11?Press Win+X and open Device Manager, expand Cameras, right-click your webcam and choose Update driver, then Search automatically. If Windows finds nothing, download the driver from your laptop or camera manufacturer's support site directly rather than relying on Windows Update.
Why does my camera work in Teams but not in Chrome?Windows 11 grants camera permission separately to each app, and browsers are listed individually. Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Camera, scroll to the per-app list, and confirm your browser is switched on. The browser then has its own per-site permission on top of that.
What does error 0xA00F4244 mean?It is the NoCamerasAreAttached error, meaning Windows cannot detect a camera at all. Check the physical connection and any privacy shutter first, then Device Manager for a driver fault, then the camera privacy toggles in Settings.
Why is my Windows 11 camera blurry or oddly framed? On devices with Windows Studio Effects, Windows may be applying automatic framing and background blur system-wide. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras, select your camera, and review the effects applied there.
