Why camera height is the highest-impact fix

A camera below eye level is extremely common — nearly universal with laptop webcams used at a desk — and makes a speaker appear to be looking down and away, which viewers unconsciously read as disengagement even when full attention is being paid. This is one of the cheapest, highest-impact changes in webcam setup: a stand, a stack of books, or an external webcam mounted at eye height fixes it completely, permanently, for free.

How It Works

How Gaze Direction Is Actually Measured

This runs an on-device face mesh model with iris refinement, tracking the eye corners and the iris centers separately for each eye, every frame. Comparing the iris center's position to the surrounding eye-corner landmarks gives a horizontal and vertical offset — how far off-center your iris sits within the eye socket the camera can see.

That offset is what gets reported as your on-axis percentage and vertical bias, rather than any absolute angle. It's a genuinely measured geometric relationship, not a simulated or redirected gaze.

Camera Placement Relative to Zoom, Teams, and Meet Windows

On most calls, the camera sits at the top of your screen while the person you're watching appears further down — looking at them means looking slightly away from the lens by definition, and the size of that gap is exactly what this tool is measuring.

The single highest-impact fix is closing that physical distance: drag the call window, or at least the active speaker's tile, to the very top of your screen, directly under the camera. That one change reduces the eye-line gap more than adjusting your gaze consciously ever will.

A larger monitor makes the gap worse by default, since the person you're looking at can sit much further from the lens in absolute screen distance. Keeping your call window smaller and pinned near the camera matters more on a large display than a small one.

Laptop webcams sit structurally below eye level for most seated postures, which this tool will read as a consistent downward vertical bias no matter how good your on-screen habits are — a stand or riser that lifts the whole laptop is a hardware fix no amount of window positioning replaces.
