Why mirrored and unmirrored both matter
Video call software almost always shows you a mirrored self-view while sending an unmirrored image to everyone else. This is deliberate: mirrored motion is what your brain expects, because it matches a bathroom mirror. Reach to your right and the reflection reaches to its right too.
The consequence catches people out constantly. Text is the clearest example — hold up a business card, a book cover, or a name badge and it reads backwards in a mirrored view while appearing correct to your audience. Anything asymmetric behaves the same way: a parting in your hair, a logo on your shirt, a lanyard sitting on one shoulder.
So the two modes answer two different questions. Leave the horizontal flip on when you are adjusting something on yourself, because the movements feel natural. Turn it off when you want to see exactly what the other side of a call sees.

A note on the flip and your recordings
The flip applied here is a display transform in your browser. It changes what you see on this page and nothing else — it does not alter your camera's output, and it does not carry over into Zoom, Teams, OBS, or any recording you make elsewhere. If you need a genuinely mirrored feed in another application, that has to be set inside that application, since a web page cannot reach into another program's video pipeline.
