Mechanical sliders are the more immediately obvious of the two — a small physical tab or slider built directly into the laptop's bezel, positioned right beside or around the camera itself, that you slide with a finger to physically cover or reveal the lens. When engaged, these provide genuine, verifiable physical assurance the camera cannot see anything, since the lens is mechanically blocked regardless of what any software might report.
Electronic kill switches work completely differently — a dedicated function key combination, usually involving the Fn key alongside a key marked with a camera icon, cuts power or signal to the camera at the hardware or firmware level, again independent of any operating system setting. Because there's no visible moving part, these are considerably easier to overlook or forget about compared to a mechanical slider you can literally see.
Not every laptop includes either feature, and some include only one — a mechanical slider without an electronic switch, or vice versa — so checking both possibilities is worth doing rather than assuming your specific laptop has neither simply because you haven't previously noticed one.

Not every laptop from any of these manufacturers includes a physical shutter at all — it remains an optional feature on a meaningful share of models even from brands that offer it elsewhere in their lineup, so its absence on a lower-cost or older model doesn't indicate anything is missing or broken.

That means Windows can show camera access as fully permitted while the antivirus software blocks it anyway, at a layer Windows has no visibility into. How do I re-enable my camera in Device Manager if it's disabled?
