Reading text and looking at a camera lens are two different directions unless you deliberately close the gap. A script on your desk or a second monitor pulls your eyes noticeably away from the lens, which reads clearly as not looking at the camera.
The viewer does not consciously measure the angle — they simply register that you are looking at something else.
Put your script as close to the camera as physically possible
Without a teleprompter, position printed notes or a phone directly behind or immediately beside your webcam rather than on a separate monitor or desk surface. Every inch of distance from the lens increases the visible eye-line gap.

Use a teleprompter overlay positioned right at the lens
A screen overlay positioned directly behind or immediately around your camera minimises the angle between where your eyes point and where the lens is. That is the entire principle professional teleprompters are built on.
An on-screen overlay has a practical advantage over printed notes: you can adjust scroll speed to your delivery instead of adjusting your delivery to fixed text.
Practise reading in short phrases, not word by word
Glancing down briefly to take in a full phrase, then looking back up to deliver it while holding eye contact, looks far more natural than trying to read continuously while staring at the lens.

Slow your pace slightly
A naturally slower, more deliberate delivery gives you more time per phrase to glance and recover eye contact smoothly, rather than rushing and needing to look down more often.
Slower delivery also reads as more confident on camera, so this helps twice.
Position your camera at eye level to begin with
If your camera is angled up or down relative to your natural eye line, even perfect technique will look slightly off.

Troubleshooting checklist: reading a script on camera
Position first, then delivery. The physical setup does most of the work.
- Raise the camera to eye level before adjusting anything else.
- Move your script off the desk and up to the level of the lens.
- Tape printed notes immediately beside the camera, or prop a phone directly beneath it.
- If using an on-screen prompter, place the text window right at the top of the screen.
- Do not mirror the text unless you are using a beam-splitter rig.
- Mark the script into phrase-length chunks so you know where each glance lands.
- Slow your delivery slightly to give yourself recovery time between phrases.
- Record a short rehearsal and watch it back before the real thing.
