Why does my webcam look yellow or blue (auto white balance fix)

Quick answer: A yellow or blue tint is a white-balance error: the camera is guessing your light source's colour temperature and getting it wrong, usually because several different light sources are mixed in one room. Use one dominant light, or set white balance manually.

Understand what white balance is actually doing

Every light source has a colour temperature — warm and yellow for incandescent bulbs and sunset, cool and blue for overcast daylight and some LEDs. The camera constantly guesses this and shifts colours to compensate.

It can guess wrong, and it guesses worst when several sources with different temperatures appear in the same frame.

Reduce mixed lighting in the frame

A yellow desk lamp, blue-white overhead LEDs and daylight from a window in the same shot give the algorithm conflicting signals to average across, often producing a cast that is wrong for all three.

Turning off the least useful source is usually more effective than adding another. Aim for one dominant, consistent light.

Auto white balance averages across everything in frame. Removing competing sources is more effective than adding a better one.

Match your light bulbs' colour temperature

If you can control your bulbs, using ones labelled around 5000 to 5600K, sold as daylight white, gives most webcams an easier and more neutral target than very warm 2700K or very cool 6500K bulbs.

Matching bulbs to each other matters more than the exact figure. Two 4000K bulbs beat one 2700K and one 6500K every time.

Check for a manual white balance setting

Many manufacturer apps, including Logitech G Hub and Razer Synapse, include a manual white-balance or colour-temperature slider, or a lock button you trigger while pointing at something neutral such as a sheet of white paper.

Locking white balance also stops the picture shifting colour mid-call when someone opens a blind or turns a lamp on.

Give the camera time to re-adjust after a lighting change

Auto white balance often takes a few seconds to re-converge after a light is switched on or off. If colours look wrong immediately after a change, wait a moment before judging the result.

Judging too quickly leads people to change a second setting while the first is still settling, which makes the cause harder to identify.

Rule out a genuinely faulty sensor

If white balance is wildly wrong even under a single, well-lit, neutral light source, and does not improve with any of the above, it may point to a manufacturing defect in that specific unit.

Test the camera on another computer first, since a corrupted driver profile can produce a persistent cast that looks like a hardware fault.

Where white balance can be corrected in each tool

Conferencing apps do not expose white balance at all, so correction has to happen at the camera or in a capture tool.

Zoom offers no colour controls, so anything you fix must be fixed before the stream reaches it.

Troubleshooting checklist: yellow or blue colour cast

Simplify the lighting first — most casts disappear once the camera has one clear target.

  1. Count the distinct light sources in frame and turn off the least useful ones.
  2. Aim for one dominant source rather than several with different colour temperatures.
  3. Replace mismatched bulbs so they share a colour temperature, ideally around 5000K.
  4. Close a blind if daylight is competing with artificial light in the same shot.
  5. Wait several seconds after any lighting change before judging the colour.
  6. Open your camera utility and set white balance manually rather than automatically.
  7. Hold a sheet of white paper in frame and use the lock or reference button if offered.
  8. Test the camera on another computer before concluding the sensor is faulty.
