Why is my camera not showing up in Microsoft Teams settings?

Quick answer: If your camera works everywhere else but is missing from the Teams dropdown, Teams has either never been granted OS-level camera permission or is reading a stale device cache. Re-grant permission in your system privacy settings, then clear the Teams cache and restart the app.

If a camera works in other apps but not Teams specifically, the issue is almost always Teams' own permission grant or a stale device cache, not the camera itself. That distinction matters: reinstalling drivers or replacing the webcam will not help.

Teams keeps its own list of capture devices, separate from the one Windows or macOS maintains. When that list goes stale — after a driver update, a dock change, or an interrupted update — the camera vanishes from the dropdown even though the OS still sees it.

Before touching a Teams setting, establish whether this is a Teams problem at all. Open the camera in something that uses a different capture path — a browser, or your operating system's built-in camera app.

  1. Windows: open the Camera app from the Start menu, or run the browser test above.
  2. macOS: open Photo Booth, or QuickTime Player → File → New Movie Recording.
  3. If it fails everywhere, stop here — the fault is the device or driver, not Teams.

Teams requests camera permission separately from your browser

The first time Teams needs the camera, your OS shows a permission dialog for the Teams app specifically, separate from your browser's permissions. If you dismissed or denied it once, Teams will not ask again — the denial is remembered indefinitely.

Every desktop application holds an independent permission record, so granting access to Chrome months ago does not cover Teams.

Re-check the OS-level camera permission for the Teams app

Open the per-application list in your system privacy settings and confirm Teams is present and enabled. The master toggle being on is not sufficient — the per-app entry must be on too.

  1. Windows 11: Settings → Privacy & security → Camera, then scroll to Microsoft Teams in the per-app list.
  2. Windows 10: Settings → Privacy → Camera → Allow desktop apps to access your camera.
  3. macOS: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera. A newly granted permission needs a full quit and relaunch.

Check the Camera dropdown in Teams Settings → Devices

Click your profile picture → Settings → Devices and open the Camera dropdown. What it shows tells you where the problem sits. If the camera is listed, select it explicitly even if it looks chosen already — re-selecting forces Teams to re-request the stream.

If it is missing entirely, open Device Manager and check Cameras for a warning triangle. A greyed-out dropdown points back at the permission grant.

Clear the Teams cache to rebuild the device list

A corrupted local cache is a known cause of device-list problems. The cache stores the enumerated device list, and when it desynchronises the dropdown keeps showing yesterday's hardware.

Quit Teams fully first — closing the window leaves it in the tray. Microsoft's documentation lists the exact cache path, which differs between classic and new Teams.

Use Teams on the web to isolate the desktop client

Open Teams in a browser and join a test meeting. This is the cleanest single diagnostic available, because the web client uses your browser's camera permission rather than the desktop app's.

Working on the web but not the desktop points to a reinstall. Failing in both puts the fault further down the stack.

Exact settings paths in Zoom, Teams, Google Meet and OBS

Teams is not the only app keeping a private device list. If you are troubleshooting across several tools, these are the exact locations to check.

Microsoft Teams

Profile picture → Settings → Devices → Camera

This dropdown reflects Teams' cached enumeration, not a live query. If you plugged the camera in after launching Teams, restart the app before concluding the device is invisible.

Zoom

Settings → Video → Camera

Zoom re-enumerates devices whenever you open the Video pane, so it recovers from a hot-plugged camera faster than Teams. A camera visible in Zoom but not Teams proves the device and driver are healthy.

Google Meet

More options (⋮) → Settings → Video → Camera

Meet runs in the browser and inherits the browser's camera permission rather than holding its own, which makes it a useful check on whether the browser permission layer is intact.

OBS Studio

Troubleshooting checklist: camera missing from Teams

Work down in order — each step is less invasive than the one after it.

  1. Close every other app holding the camera — browser tabs, Zoom, OBS — then reopen Teams.
  2. Unplug and replug an external webcam, then restart Teams so it re-enumerates devices.
  3. In Teams, go to Settings → Devices and explicitly re-select your camera from the dropdown.
  4. Confirm the per-app camera toggle for Teams is on in your OS privacy settings, not just the master switch.
  5. Quit Teams fully from the tray or menu bar and relaunch — macOS needs this after any permission change.
  6. Sign in to Teams on the web and join a test meeting to isolate the desktop client.
  7. Clear the Teams cache folder for your client version, following Microsoft's documented path, then restart.
  8. Check Device Manager for a warning triangle on the camera, then update the driver or reinstall Teams.
