Why is my Zoom camera showing a black box or freezing?

Quick answer: A black box means Zoom never got a stream — usually another app holds the camera or permission was denied. Freezing means Zoom got a stream and something interrupted it, usually CPU load or a driver fault. The two symptoms need different fixes.

A black box usually means Zoom can't get a stream at all; freezing usually means it got one but something interrupted it — the fixes overlap but the diagnosis differs.

Work out which one you have before starting. A black box from the moment you join is a different problem from a picture that runs for ten minutes and then stops.

Black box — check for a camera conflict first

On Windows especially, a camera can usually be held by only one application at a time. If a browser tab, a second conferencing app or a recording tool has the stream, Zoom gets nothing and shows black.

  1. Close every other app that might hold the camera, including background browser tabs.
  2. Quit Zoom fully from the system tray or menu bar, not just the meeting window.
  3. Reopen Zoom first, before anything else that uses the camera.

Black box — re-select the camera in Zoom's settings

Go to Settings → Video and explicitly choose your camera from the dropdown, even if it looks already selected. Re-selecting forces Zoom to re-request the stream rather than reusing a handle that failed.

If the dropdown lists the camera but the preview stays black, the device is visible to Zoom and the fault is in acquiring the stream, which points at a conflict or a driver fault rather than permissions.

Black box — confirm camera permission was granted to Zoom

Zoom needs to be individually permitted, not just covered by the OS-wide toggle. On Windows this is Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera; on macOS, System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera.

Freezing — check CPU load during screen share

Screen sharing plus video plus a virtual background or blur is a common combination that overloads lower-powered machines, freezing the video feed specifically while audio keeps working.

Audio continuing while video stops is a useful signal: it means the connection is fine and the encode pipeline is what gave out. Turn off background effects during heavy screen-share sessions.

Freezing — check for a driver or firmware update

An outdated camera driver can intermittently stop delivering frames under sustained load, which looks like periodic freezing rather than a hard crash.

Get the driver from the camera manufacturer rather than Windows Update, and check whether the vendor ships a firmware updater — several external webcams do.

Freezing — test outside Zoom entirely

If the camera also freezes in another app or in a basic browser preview, the problem is the camera or driver rather than Zoom, which changes where you should focus.

Let the test run for as long as the freeze usually takes to appear. A thirty-second check will not reproduce a fault that shows up after ten minutes.

Camera conflicts and permission grants work the same way across desktop apps, so these paths are worth knowing whichever client you are in.

Zoom

Settings → Video → Camera

Re-selecting the device in this dropdown forces a fresh stream request, which is the fastest recovery from a black preview.

Microsoft Teams

Profile picture → Settings → Devices → Camera

Teams caches its device list, so it needs a full restart after a conflict clears rather than just reopening the settings pane.

Google Meet

More options (⋮) → Settings → Video → Camera

Meet uses the browser's camera permission, so a working Meet call alongside a black Zoom preview points squarely at Zoom's own grant.

OBS Studio

Sources → Video Capture Device → Properties → Deactivate

OBS holds the camera open even when minimised. Use Deactivate in the source properties to release it without closing OBS.

Troubleshooting checklist: Zoom black box or freezing video

Identify which symptom you have first — the first four steps address a black box, the last four address freezing.

  1. Close every other app and browser tab that could be holding the camera, then quit Zoom fully.
  2. Reopen Zoom before anything else that uses the camera, and check the preview in Settings → Video.
  3. Re-select your camera explicitly from the dropdown even if it already appears chosen.
  4. Confirm Zoom is individually ticked in your OS camera privacy list, then relaunch the app.
  5. Turn off virtual background and blur, especially while screen sharing.
  6. Watch whether audio keeps working when video stops, which points at encode load rather than network.
  7. Update the camera driver from the manufacturer and check for a firmware updater.
  8. Run the camera in another app for as long as the freeze normally takes to appear.
