How to fix grainy or pixelated video in Google Meet calls
Quick answer: Grain and pixelation look similar but have opposite causes. Blocky squares around movement mean Meet has dropped your bitrate for bandwidth. Fine shimmering speckle in shadows means your camera is boosting sensor gain in low light. Fix bandwidth first, then lighting.
Grain and pixelation are visually similar but have different root causes — grain usually comes from low light, blocky pixelation usually comes from bandwidth. Telling them apart before changing settings saves a great deal of wasted effort.
The quickest test: freeze on a still moment and look at a plain wall. Shimmering speckle that never settles is sensor noise. Hard-edged squares that appear when you move and resolve when you sit still are compression artefacts.

Google Meet automatically lowers video bitrate when it detects a constrained connection, which shows up as blocky compression artifacts, especially around motion. This is the single most common cause.
Upload speed is the number that matters, not download. Meet needs roughly 3.2 Mbps upstream for a stable 720p send; below about 1 Mbps it falls back to a blocky picture. Test during a call, not when the network is idle.
Lower Meet's own send-resolution setting manually
In Meet, click the three-dot menu → Settings → Video and check the resolution being sent. If it is higher than your connection can sustain, dropping it manually often looks better than letting Meet auto-adjust mid-call.
A steady 360p stream is more watchable than a 720p stream that keeps collapsing into blocks and recovering. Meet's automatic adaptation reacts only after quality has already degraded; setting the ceiling yourself avoids that oscillation.

Add light if the problem is grain rather than blocks
Grainy rather than blocky video means the sensor is boosting gain to compensate for low light, which introduces visible noise. More light in front of you removes the sensor's need to do this, and the improvement is immediate.
- Put your main light source in front of you at roughly eye level, not behind or directly overhead.
- Aim for soft, broad light — a daytime window, or a lamp bounced off a pale wall.
- Avoid a bright window behind you, which forces the sensor to expose for the window and underexpose your face.
Close other apps competing for the same upload path
Cloud backups, large downloads and other video calls on the same network all reduce what is available to Meet in real time. Backup clients are especially disruptive because they are designed to saturate the upload path whenever it looks idle.
Pause Dropbox, OneDrive, iCloud or Backblaze before an important call. On a shared connection another person's upload is indistinguishable from your own.

Check whether you have hit the camera's actual resolution ceiling
A camera that natively maxes out at 720p will look soft or blocky when a call displays it larger than that, and no Meet setting changes this — only a higher-resolution camera will.
Rule this out early — many built-in laptop cameras top out at 720p regardless of what the spec sheet implies.
Test on a wired connection to remove Wi-Fi from the equation
Wi-Fi congestion and interference cause exactly this kind of intermittent quality drop. A wired Ethernet connection removes that variable entirely for testing, even if you do not stay wired permanently.
A clean wired call and a blocky Wi-Fi call localises the problem to the wireless link — from there, move closer to the router or switch to 5 GHz.

Google Meet

Meet offers only two send options in most deployments, making this a coarse but effective control. Changes apply mid-call without rejoining, so you can adjust and watch the result immediately.
Zoom
Settings → Video → My Video → Enable HD
Zoom's HD checkbox is separate from what your camera can do, and Zoom silently disables it under sustained load or in busy multi-participant calls.
Microsoft Teams
Settings → Devices (quality is automatic)
Teams deliberately offers no manual send-resolution control, so bandwidth housekeeping matters proportionally more here than on Meet.
OBS Studio
Settings → Video → Output (Scaled) Resolution
If you route a virtual camera into Meet through OBS, OBS's output becomes the real ceiling and Meet re-encodes on top of it. Stacking two lossy encodes is a common, avoidable cause of poor quality.
