Why does Google Meet crop my wide-angle webcam feed?
Quick answer: Google Meet forces every participant into an identical 16:9 tile. A wide-angle lens captures a wider field than that tile can display, so Meet centre-crops the sides away. This is standard platform behaviour, not a fault in your camera or its driver.
Meet, like most video platforms, forces every camera feed into a standard 16:9 tile — a wide-angle lens captures more horizontally than that tile can show, so the edges get cut. Nothing is broken and no driver update will change it.
Once you know the crop is fixed and predictable, you can work with it. The practical goal is controlling what gets cropped, which you do at the camera and at your seating position rather than in Meet's settings.

Video call platforms standardise every participant's tile to the same aspect ratio — almost always 16:9 — for a consistent grid layout, regardless of what your camera actually captures.
A uniform grid is deliberate: if tiles varied in shape by camera, gallery view would be chaotic. The cost is that anything wider than 16:9 loses its edges.
A wide-angle lens captures more than a call tile needs
Wide and ultra-wide webcams — often 90° or more of horizontal field of view — are built for group shots or flexible framing, but that extra width is exactly what gets trimmed when squeezed into a standard tile.
For one person at a desk a wide field of view works against you anyway: it places you further back and makes you smaller in the tile.

Check your camera's own field-of-view setting
Some webcams, especially ones marketed for streaming, let you switch between FOV modes in their companion app. This is the most effective fix here, because it moves the decision from Meet to you — a camera set to 65° or 78° delivers a frame that already fits the tile, so nothing is discarded.
- Logitech: Logi Tune, or the older Logitech Camera Settings utility, under Field of View.
- Razer: Razer Synapse → Camera → FOV slider.
- Elgato: Camera Hub → Field of View. OBSBOT and Insta360 expose the same in their own utilities.
Reframe yourself to compensate for a symmetric crop
Because Meet crops symmetrically from the sides, positioning yourself to compensate can keep you centred in what viewers actually see.
The reliable way to do this is to watch a live preview of the cropped result rather than calculating it. Meet's self-view shows the cropped tile, so adjust while watching it and trust that over what the camera utility shows.

Move the camera closer to reduce what the crop costs you
Reducing the distance between you and the lens increases how much of the frame you occupy, which reduces how much the crop matters.
A wide lens at arm's length puts you in the centre third of the frame and the crop removes mostly empty room. The same lens across a desk puts you small in a wide scene, and the crop takes a proportionally larger bite out of what mattered.
Check other platforms before assuming this is Meet-specific
Zoom, Teams and most others crop to 16:9 the same way, so this is a standing constraint rather than a per-platform quirk.
The exception worth knowing is OBS, where you define the canvas yourself. Routing the camera through OBS and out as a virtual camera lets you letterbox or reframe deliberately, though the receiving platform still delivers it inside a 16:9 tile.

Meet offers no aspect-ratio or zoom control. Your only levers are the camera's field-of-view setting and where you sit; the self-view accurately shows the cropped result.
Zoom

Zoom is the one mainstream platform with a genuine escape hatch — Original ratio preserves the camera's native aspect ratio and adds bars rather than cropping the sides away.
Microsoft Teams
Settings → Devices → Camera
Teams crops to 16:9 with no override. Automatic framing tracks and re-crops around you, which is useful if you move but makes visible framing less predictable.
OBS Studio
Settings → Video → Base (Canvas) Resolution, then Edit Transform
Right-click the source → Transform → Edit Transform gives numeric crop values — the most precise framing control available in any of these tools.

Troubleshooting checklist: regaining control of your Meet framing
Ordered by how much control each step gives back, starting with the quickest.
- Open Meet's self-view before joining and treat what it shows as the truth about your framing.
- Move the camera closer to you, or yourself closer to it, so you occupy more of the frame.
- Raise the camera to roughly eye level, which usually improves framing more than any horizontal adjustment.
- Open your webcam manufacturer's utility and look for a field-of-view or zoom preset.
- Set field of view to standard or narrow rather than wide, then recheck the self-view.
- Turn off automatic framing or subject tracking while you establish a stable baseline.
- In Zoom specifically, tick Settings → Video → Original ratio if you need full width preserved.
- For recorded work, route the camera through OBS and set the crop numerically in Edit Transform.
