Why is my webcam feed dark when sitting in front of a window?

Quick answer: This is backlighting. Your camera meters for the brightest thing in frame, which is the window, so everything else including your face is pushed into shadow. Turning your desk to face the window fixes it completely; adding a front light fixes it well.

This is a backlighting problem: your camera exposes for the brightest thing in frame — the window — which forces everything else, including your face, into shadow.

No camera setting can fully solve a scene where the background is thirty times brighter than the subject. The effective fixes change the scene rather than the settings.

Webcams, like all cameras, pick one overall exposure level for the whole frame. A bright window forces the camera to darken its exposure so the window is not blown out to pure white, and crushing your face into shadow is the side effect.

The camera is not malfunctioning — it is doing exactly what it was designed to do with an impossible brightness range.

The real fix is turning around, if you can

Facing your desk toward the window instead of away from it is the single most effective fix. You get the window's light on your face rather than behind you, and daylight is a better light source than most lamps.

Even rotating the desk partially, so the window is ahead of you rather than behind, resolves most of the problem.

Turning the desk so the window is in front of you converts the problem into an advantage — daylight becomes a large, soft key light.

If you cannot move the desk, add a light in front of you

A desk lamp, a ring light, or even a bright monitor angled toward your face adds enough light to compete with the window, so the camera no longer has to choose between blowing out the window and crushing your face.

  1. Place the light between you and the camera, slightly above eye level.
  2. Increase its brightness until your face and the window look closer in exposure.
  3. A daylight-balanced bulb around 5000K matches window light and avoids a colour cast.

Close blinds or curtains partially

Reducing how much window light enters the frame reduces the contrast range the camera has to manage, even without adding any new light source.

Partial closure is usually enough. The goal is narrowing the gap between subject and background, not eliminating the daylight.

Check for a manual exposure or backlight compensation setting

Some webcam software, particularly manufacturer apps from Logitech and Razer, includes a backlight compensation toggle that biases exposure toward faces rather than the background.

Manual exposure works even better where available, because you can set the level for your face and simply accept a blown-out window.

As a last resort, reposition sideways to the window

If you cannot face the window directly, angling your desk so it is to your side rather than directly behind turns hard backlighting into softer side lighting.

Side lighting is not ideal on its own — it produces one bright and one shadowed side — but it is a clear improvement, and a small fill light on the dark side finishes it.

Software compensation helps at the margins, but it works by brightening shadows, which also amplifies noise.

Zoom

Settings → Video → Adjust for low light

Manual at a modest level looks better than auto, which tends to lift shadows aggressively and add visible noise.

Microsoft Teams

Settings → Devices → Adjust brightness

A single toggle with no level control, so physical changes to your lighting matter more on Teams.

Google Meet

Settings → Video → Video lighting adjustment

Runs in the browser and costs CPU, which can reduce frame rate on older laptops.

Troubleshooting checklist: dark feed with a window behind you

Ordered by effectiveness. The first step solves it outright where it is possible.

  1. Turn your desk so the window is in front of you rather than behind.
  2. If the desk cannot move, rotate so the window is to your side instead.
  3. Close blinds or curtains partially to narrow the brightness gap.
  4. Place a lamp between you and the camera, slightly above eye level.
  5. Use a daylight-balanced bulb around 5000K so it matches the window light.
  6. Raise your monitor brightness and open a plain white window as extra fill.
  7. Turn on backlight compensation in your camera utility if it offers one.
  8. Set exposure manually for your face and accept a blown-out window.
