Every background-blur system — Zoom, Teams, Meet and OBS plugins alike — uses a model to guess pixel by pixel which parts of the frame are you. Thin, moving hair strands are the single hardest case for that model, so some tearing is expected rather than a sign something is broken.

Increase contrast between your hair and the background
The model relies partly on colour and brightness contrast to find edges. If your hair colour is close to your wall colour, tearing gets noticeably worse, and a visually distinct background behind you helps immediately.
Dark hair against a dark wall is the worst common case. Moving so a lighter section of wall sits behind your head often does more than any software change.

Add light behind you, not just in front
A separation light aimed at the back of your head creates a rim of contrast the model can lock onto, which measurably reduces tearing compared with flat, even lighting alone. An inexpensive lamp is enough.
- Place a lamp behind and slightly to one side of you, out of frame, aimed at your head and shoulders.
- Keep it dimmer than your front light so it reads as a rim rather than a spotlight.
- Check the result in a live preview while turning your head, not while sitting still.
Pull hair back or reduce movement near the silhouette edge
Loose strands moving in and out of frame between video frames confuse the model's edge tracking, because the boundary it found on the previous frame no longer matches.
Tying hair back reduces the amount of fine, moving detail at your silhouette's edge, which is exactly the input the model handles worst.

Check whether your device is under CPU load
Background blur is real-time video processing running on top of everything else. On an already-strained machine, blur quality — not just frame rate — visibly degrades.

Confirm you are on the current Zoom version
