Budget webcams are the category where advertised specifications and delivered performance diverge most. The reading above is what your browser negotiated with the camera, which is the number that actually matters.

Interpolation is the key concept here. A camera can advertise a resolution higher than its sensor natively captures by upscaling in software, exactly as enlarging a photo does. The pixel count goes up; the actual detail does not. This is legal and common, and it is why a cheap camera claiming 4K can look noticeably softer than a good 1080p one.

Troubleshooting Budget Webcam Issues
1. The advertised resolution is not offered at all
The problem: The camera was sold as 4K or 1080p but the test reports something lower.
The fix: First rule out the connection: high resolutions need USB 3.0 bandwidth, and a USB 2.0 port, a hub or a long unpowered extension can silently cap the camera. Connect directly to a USB 3.0 port. If the figure is still lower than advertised, the camera may only offer that resolution in specific software rather than to a browser, or the claim may rely on interpolation.
2. The resolution is right but the image looks soft
The problem: You get the pixel count you paid for, but it does not look like it.
The fix: This is the interpolation signature. Detail is limited by the sensor and lens, not the output resolution. It is also worth checking your lighting before blaming the camera, because budget sensors degrade faster in dim conditions than expensive ones — often the image is soft because the room is dark rather than because the camera is upscaling.
3. The camera is not detected on some machines
The problem: It works on one computer but not another.
The fix: Most budget webcams are standard USB Video Class devices needing no driver, so non-detection is usually a port, cable or permission issue. Some brands do ship optional utilities, but if a camera requires a proprietary driver to be recognised at all, that is worth knowing before you rely on it for work.
